I think people are sometimes surprised when I tell them I shoot boudoir. It’s such a specific area of photography and although boudoir has gained such popularity over the last several years it’s still considered somewhat taboo (it’s not). Although I spend most of my days photographing beautiful women in lingerie and have for the past seven years it’s really not about beauty or lingerie or even sexiness for me. It’s the reasons behind what motivate the women to contact us and book a shoot in the first place that make me feel so excited and happy to be walking into my studio everyday. Maybe they’re doing it as a gift for their upcoming wedding and know that not only will their future spouse LOVE the images but that they will LOVE doing the shoot as a really fun part of the wedding planning process. Maybe they are a mom and between bath time, dinner time, snotty nose time and temper tantrum time they’ve lost site of what a precious and unique gem they are and that they’re worthy of taking some photos to celebrate that. Or perhaps they have been through a rough patch (as we all do) and need something to get her mojo back. Whatever the reason I love it. I love seeing the evolution of the woman that walks into the studio, usually nervous and timid, and by the end of her shoot feeling confident and with a new sense of pride. I will always love shooting boudoir, and hey, when you receive emails like the one below you know you must be doing something right…
“And Siobhan, the art you create is something that will last for a lifetime. After many many many many years pass, when I die an old, content woman, the big beautiful portrait displayed at my funeral will be one of yours. Because you have a rare gift of capturing a woman in the way she imagines herself. Not in the dirty yoga pants she found on the floor from yesterday’s workout, with ratty hair, hanging on by a thread, trying to keep up with life. But in a way where she stops to remember that she’s special and beautiful and amazing and confident…even in those yoga pants…where she tells the world through your pictures that she’s a diamond.”
